Frequently asked questions about VAT

What is the rate of VAT in Albania?

The standard rate is 20% and applies to most goods and services. The law also provides reduced rates of 10% and 6% for defined sectors, as well as zero-rated and exempt supplies.

How do I remove VAT from a price that includes it?

Divide the total by (1 + rate/100): a price of 12,000 lek including VAT at 20% is 10,000 lek net plus 2,000 lek of VAT. The calculator does the split for you, accurate down to the smallest unit.

How do I add VAT to a price that excludes it?

Multiply the net value by the rate: on 10,000 lek at 20% you add 2,000 lek of VAT, so the total becomes 12,000 lek.

Who has to register for VAT?

Businesses with annual turnover above the legal registration threshold, currently 10 million lek. Below that threshold registration is voluntary; check your own situation with your accountant.

Why must the VAT split match on a fiscal invoice?

The central invoice system (CIS) checks the arithmetic of every fiscalised invoice: the value excluding VAT plus the VAT must give exactly the total. An invoice with an incorrect split is rejected by the system.

In Fiscal Pro you never do this split by hand: every invoice computes the tax itself and carries it correctly into fiscalization. Ask for the free trial and try it with your own items.
